Visa Types Overview

Below is an overview of common visa categories along with official links for detailed requirements and application guidance.

Visitor Visa (Tourist / Short-Stay)

Short-term

A Visitor Visa lets you enter South Africa for leisure, sightseeing, or short-term stays. Some nationalities may enter visa-free for up to 90 days, while others must apply in advance through a South African mission.

Remote Work / Digital Nomad Visa

Remote work

Designed for people who work remotely for an employer or clients outside South Africa. Typically allows extended stay (often referenced up to 36 months). Applicants generally need proof of foreign income and employment/business.

Work Visas

Employment

Critical Skills Work Visa

For professionals with expertise in occupations South Africa needs. In some cases, it may be possible to apply without a job offer if your occupation appears on the official Critical Skills List.

General Work Visa

Requires a confirmed job offer from a South African employer. Employers typically must demonstrate that no local candidate is available.

Intra-Company Transfer Work Visa

For employees of international companies being transferred to a South African office.

Retirement Visa

Long-stay

For individuals who want to live in South Africa after retirement, provided they can show sufficient income from pensions, annuities, or other stable sources. Some embassies may apply age-based interpretations.

Study Visa

Education

For individuals enrolled in South African educational institutions. Allows you to remain in the country during your studies, with certain permissions for limited work (depending on conditions).

Spousal & Relative Visas

Family

If you are married to or a close family member of a South African citizen or permanent resident, you may qualify for a relative or spousal visa. These pathways help dependents join the primary applicant and can come with broader permissions.

Business Visa

Entrepreneurs

For entrepreneurs and investors planning to establish or invest in a business in South Africa. Requirements vary based on investment amount, business plan, sector, and compliance documentation.

Other Specialized Visa Types

Special cases

Additional categories may exist for activities such as Artist/Creative work, Research & Academic collaborations, and Volunteer work. Requirements depend on the purpose of stay and supporting evidence.

2) Financial Requirements

Applicants generally need to show they can financially support themselves while in South Africa. Minimum amounts vary by visa type.

  • Recent bank statements
  • Proof of income or pension
  • Employment or remote work contracts
  • Business financials (for business visas)
3) Medical Requirements

Many long-stay visas require a medical report and (often) a radiological report (chest X-ray) to screen for tuberculosis. Medical reports typically must be recent (commonly within 6 months).

4) Police Clearance / Security Requirements

Applicants may need police clearance certificates from their country of citizenship and any country where they lived for 12+ months since age 18. Clearances often must be original and recent, and may require authentication or apostille depending on the issuing country.

5) If You Are Being Hosted
  • Letter of invitation from your host
  • Copy of host’s ID or passport
  • Proof of host’s residence in South Africa
  • Sometimes proof of host’s financial means
6) Processing Time

Processing times vary widely by visa type, country of application, volume, and documentation completeness. Delays are common — apply well in advance of intended travel.

  • Visitor visas: often a few weeks
  • Temporary residence visas: commonly 8–12 weeks (sometimes longer)
  • Complex or long-term visas: can take several months
7) Where to Submit Your Application

Visa applications are typically submitted outside South Africa at a South African embassy/consulate/high commission, or via VFS Global depending on your country. Many long-term visas cannot be applied for from inside South Africa unless an exemption applies.
