Before You Understand South Africa Today, You Have to Understand What Came Before.
History gives us context. And context creates room for grace.
For African Americans relocating to South Africa, understanding the country’s history is not simply about learning dates, leaders or political events.
It is about understanding people.
The customs, cultures, expectations, mindsets and everyday behaviors you encounter here may sometimes confuse you, frustrate you, challenge you or even make you question whether South Africa is the right place for you.
But when you understand where people come from, what communities have endured, how systems shaped families, neighborhoods, opportunity and identity — and what many South Africans are still navigating today — something changes.
You gain the ability to meet difference with grace, respect and understanding instead of judgment.
That understanding matters if we are serious about building meaningful relationships between the African diaspora and the people who call this land home.
My hope is that this journey through South African history creates more compassion, more brotherly love, and a greater desire to work, build and grow together.
